Did you think I would forget to continue this story? Never, mainly because this next male author just happens to be my author boyfriend, but he just doesn't know it...
His first book written, "Election," took the longest to get published. In fact, there was pretty much a race to to see which came out first, the book or movie ...
Perhaps you've seen it- stars Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick?
If you haven't seen the movie, rent it. Better yet- read the dang book- the characters are brilliantly written and funnier than you can imagine.
Tom published "This Wishbones" next. This is a novel about a group of guys from New Jersey who are in a wedding band-and how each of them approach their role in the band and in life. (Not to be confused with the movie, The Wedding Singer.)
There's something about his characters- they creep into your head and stay with you. You can't help but like them, despite the crap they pull.
He followed up with "Joe College" which is the story of a blue collar guy who goes to Yale and what happens to him the summer he comes home to work his father's lung wagon.
He wrote another book of short essays about growing up in the seventies, "Bad Haircut." Very fun and touching stories of adolescents.
Probably the novel you've heard the most about because once again, it was made into a movie- is "Little Children." Tom actually co-wrote the screenplay and was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work.
Now, this book for me, seemed like a much different departure from his other novels. The subject matter is disturbing. Two people- meet at the neighborhood park, engage in an extra-marital affair and each has their own disturbing reality mucking up their life, which is what causes them to start the dalliance. The most riveting of the "other stuff" is the the story of a sexual deviant who's moved back into the neighborhood and causes much trouble. (p.s.-the movie made some major headlines for the sex scenes....I'm just saying ...and reporting what I know...) (p.s.s.-these same scenes can be found in the book, in case you're wondering if they added them for show or something....)
Finally, and probably my favorite is "The Abstinence Teacher." This is the story of two worlds colliding- a divorced teacher who is being forced to change her class on sex education and her daughter's soccer coach who is battling his own demons- one being the Christian Coalition. Any book that includes, "hot, Christian sex," begs to be read.
Tom has a written a new novel, "The Leftovers." It doesn't have a published date at this time.
I can 100%, wholeheartedly recommend any and every book written by my Tommy, has I have read each and every one. They are all a little bit different and a lot of fun. He weaves interesting stories with titillating characters.
Stay tuned for #3 Boy author...
